CTRC Announces ‘Center for Restoration Arts & Sciences’ as Reuse Plan

The Central Terminal Restoration Corporation (CTRC) has announced its intentions for adaptive reuse plans that would see the terminal as public/private development in the realm of a Center for Restoration Arts & Sciences. The recent developments are based upon a number of groups that have toured the complex and identified synergies that would lead toward tenancy and development prospects (a mix of private developers, local foundations, Government, Education, the Arts and neighborhood nonprofits). “Interest in this adaptive reuse project is escalating from nonprofits to new businesses,” stated Paul Lang, CTRC VP and Real Estate Development (RED) Committee Chair.

Black Dog Salvage

Black Dog Salvage, located at 902 13th St. S.W., specializes in reclaiming, repurposing and reselling architectural salvage. The business is the focus of “Salvage Dawgs,” which premiered on the DIY Network on Nov. 8.

The show follows Whiteside and Kulp as they race the wrecking ball to save what they can out of architecturally unique old sites. In the first episode, you see them painstakingly pull delicate pieces out of old homes — such as a giant bay window out of the Izzard House in Floyd County.

In between, there are shots of Whiteside’s black lab, Sally the Salvage Dog.

Many of the locations featured on the show will be familiar to Southwest Virginians, and if you visit the shop, employees can point out which episode select pieces came from. Both men have an eye for finding the unique pieces in their shop, but they never imagined their partnership would…

I am a big advocate for redevelopment of vacant spaces. This blog present an interesting exhibit tackling this concept.

The Reclamation Administration

Here’s a remarkable idea: we don’t need any more buildings. We’re full up. If we need more space, we can renovate what we already have. We’re good.

Such a scenario is about as likely to occur as a mall closing because everyone’s bought enough clothes. The construction industry is a crucial, perpetual driver of our economy.

Yet that’s the premise of Re-set: New Wings For Architecture, the Dutch pavilion at this year’s Venice Architecture Biennale. “We are not hanging Objets d’Art, exhibit works or stage events,” says Petra Blaisse, the textile designer and frequent Rem Koolhaas-collaborator behind Re-set. “We are responding to the vacant architecture itself.” Rather than stage an exhibition, like most other countries at the Biennale, Blaisse and her team have filled their space with a series of shimmering curtains, hung on motorized frames that divide the expansive galleries into smaller spaces. The pavilion’s interior changes every five…

Green is Good – Sustainable Building in Affordable Housing Development

This blog provides a great overview of green building initiatives in the affordable housing sector.

Smart Decisions, Reliable Data: A blog dedicated to community and economic development issues

Across the country green building is a growing trend in the world of affordable housing development.  Early this year, FUND had the pleasure of attending the Chicago Neighborhood Development Awards, which honors the efforts of both non-profit and for-profit developers to improve Chicago area neighborhoods.  One of this year’s winners that we were most impressed with was the LEED-certified Roseland Senior Campus, an affordable senior housing complex on the city’s South Side that includes features such as solar hot water and energy-efficient equipment and lighting to reduce energy costs.

Sustainable building in affordable housing increasingly makes sense due the many benefits it can create for tenants, including costs savings through reduced energy and water consumption as well as health benefits through the use of less toxic building materials and ventilation systems that improve indoor air quality.

We recently came across articles highlighting two new affordable housing developments in…
